Ordering
All of my hats and headpieces are hand made by me, in my studio in Wakefield, Yorkshire.
If you are able to get to Wakefield, you can arrange to come and see me, either to look at / try on ready made and sample pieces to buy, or to discuss (under no obligation) having a piece made for you, and to try on a selection of hats and headpieces to inspire you.
(Please only do this by appointment, because I don't live at the studio(!), and don't have fixed working hours. To make an appointment, just email.)
If you can't get to Wakefield, I am comfortable with discussing commissions via email, and I ship pieces worldwide.
Ready to Wear and Made to Order.
Obviously, I have ready to wear pieces and sample pieces available - these appear in my website shop, and my Etsy shop, and they are ready now, and can be shipped on any working day.
I can make any of my standard designs to order, if not in stock - these may be listed in my online shops (marked as made-to-order), but if you see a design in a gallery that you like and isn't listed, do get in touch to ask - as long as the materials are still available, and I still have the block, I'm happy to recreate it. (Unless the original was a one-off couture piece, in which case I can create something similar, but not an exact replica.)
Couture.
For more special occasions, you may want to contact me about having something made specifically for you.
There's a certain magic to the word 'couture'. It evokes Paris in the 20s, and an almost mystical process. What it actually means, of course, is meeting with a designer (i.e. me), and bespeaking an item - that is, having me sit down with you; looking at arrays of materials, and samples; talking about your ideas; talking about my ideas; me getting my sketchbook and notepad out; you trying things on, and saying 'yes, I like that', or 'no, I hate that'; talking about scale, and size, and styles that suit, and styles that don't; talking about different ways of wearing hats and headpieces, and having them stay put; and eventually, together, we come to a design that is unique to you. Then you go away for a time, probably with a fitting somewhere in the middle of the period, and I make the ideas we talked about come to life.
And then you come back to me, we make sure you're happy with the finished article, and I show you how to wear it properly, how to care for it, how to store it away so that it stays safe for years to come.
And at the end of it all you have a small piece of couture, that is completely unique. (I don't reproduce couture designs, so that my clients for bespoke pieces have one-offs.)
You will need an appointment. As mentioned, I have a studio, not a shop. I'll need to meet you to let you into the building, so I'll need to know in advance you're coming (just get in touch).
Historical and theatrical pieces.
Thanks to a minor obsession with the history of fashion, and years spent as a primarily historical costumer, I also makes historical / theatrical headgear from any period of history, for men and women.
Sometimes these will appear as ready to wear or sample pieces in online shops, or as made to order designs, but as there's a huge, huge range of possibilities for the design of historical (or fantasy / futuristic) hats, the process would be the same as for a one-off couture piece. It all starts when you contact me.
